New study shows type 2 Collagen to be effective at relieving painful joints

A new double-blind study, published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, involving 55 active adults experiencing joint pain while engaging in sports activities, has shown that supplementation with type 2 collagen, UC-II, for 17 weeks, was not only perfectly tolerated by all participants, but was significantly more effective than placebo at improving comfort, flexibility and mobility of the joints.
The minimum time to onset of joint pain was significantly better in the UC-II group compared with initial values, while no significant change was observed in the placebo group. Knee extension was also measurably greater in those subjects given the UC-II.
Type 2 collagen is the main protein in cartilage structure, responsible for its resistance to traction and its endurance. This study thus reinforces the findings of numerous studies conducted at Harvard University’s Medical School which have demonstrated the ability of UC-II (undenatured type 2 collagen from chicken sternum cartilage) to regulate auto-immune attacks on the joints through a process called “oral tolerance”, which helps the body differentiate between foreign bodies and beneficial elements.
